Hey everybody it’s Dr. Zach Beatty here with Gonstead Family Chiropractic in beautiful sunny San Diego, California. Today we’re going to be talking about self adjustment. What that means is cracking your neck, putting your leg over and twisting the other way to pop your low back and give it a thrust and the long answer short is no it’s not good to do. Now why is that? Maybe some of you have even seen some of these TikTok videos out there right now where the person is crossing their leg and they’re dancing around and then they’re twisting the other way and then they collapse and they fall over. What that’s doing is actually putting a shearing motion into their spinal cord. So here’s a little segment of our spine. We have our discs in our bones and then we have the spinal cord running through the center here. So what will happen is if we’re a counter twisting right we’re creating a shearing motion along not just the discs in the bones but the spinal cord. So basically what’s happening is for lack of better terms temporary paralysis. They’re paralyzing themselves temporarily instantly and it’s gonna create long-term effects if they continue doing that. So it’s something to consider. I really don’t think that’s a good move so if your kids are doing this please check in on them with their TikToks. The other thing that will happen is when you’re doing it with your neck without the right force and not the right correction alignment. All of a sudden theartery starts to wear down. Next thing you know you have an arterial dissection stroke. This stuff is very serious and we take it very seriously in our office. That is why we have spent years doing it and that’s why chiropractors in generaI spent years training to do what we do. We are not just bone crackers, we don’t just lay it down and see what happens. We actually spend a lot of time learning this and we advise the general public to please not do this because it can actually create more harm than good. Yes it might feel instant gratification for a little bit and that’s the endorphins being released and that’s awesome, we all love it when the endorphins release the runner’s high, things like that. But, the long-term effect can be disastrous for you, so if you have questions or concerns about this let us know. We have this discussion every single day with many patients just like every other chiropractor around San Diego, in California, amongst the US and worldwide. So if you’re concerned about it, reach out to us. We have plenty of literature and things we can get to you. If you’re unsure give us a call for a 15-minute free consultation. Let’s sit down, let’s hear your concerns. We can address them and if we can’t, let’s get you into the hands of someone who can. So whether you have a low back, neck, ankle pain, shoulder pain, headaches, sciatica pain, give us a call. We’re here to help and we’re here to even instruct you on some exercises and things to do moving through a program of correction, not just put a bandaid on and see what happens.
